The eighth edition of the Golf Malaysia Irons Challenge, a unique all-irons event, will take place on August 23 at Palm Resort Golf & Country Club, Johor. The event is designed to test both seasoned and new players' skills using irons only, and is set to draw 120 amateur club golfers (18 years old and above) from around the country. This challenge, organised by Golf Malaysia Magazine, is played under a format that prohibits the use of any golf club that is NOT an iron and is billed as the only tournament in the world that is played completely with irons (which includes a putter) for all 18 of its holes. Players may use a full set of irons, a putter and, the best part is, one piece of hybrid iron (minimum loft 16 degrees) is now allowed in this Championship. The players however, must not carry more than 14 clubs in their bag. "This is an exciting event and so many golfers who think they are not able to hit with the irons in their bag have realised that they can actually master each one of them after this tournament. They have no choice! It's fun," said Juliana Cheah, publisher of Golf Malaysia. The Stableford-format tournament is open to all amateurs split into the following divisions: A - 0-12 handicap, B - 13-19, and C - 20-24 (0-30 for Women). Prizes will be awarded to the top five placed finishers in each division, and there will also be novelty events, namely Nearest-to-Pin, Nearest-to-Line Nearest to Bunker and Longest Drive. To round it all off, there will also be loads of lucky draws for those unable to tame the course with their irons this time round. Free-flowing Heineken Beer will be on hand to add to the merriment of the occasion, while BMT International, Nature Valley crunchy granola bars, Mentholatum for Men, SunPlay (Official Suncare), Daisy Spring Mineral Water and Isomax isotonic drink play their role in making this a memorable occasion for all who take up this unique challenge. Entry to play is charged at RM200, inclusive of breakfast, lunch, buggy, green fee and goody bag.
